This week I took a trip to London to see the Marlene Dumas Exhibition at the Tate Modern.
What I found intriguing about her work is her ability- through paint medium- to communicate the darker aspects of the human condition that is psychologically unnerving at times; Dumas work brings into the light, that which is normally found hidden in the dark subconscious mind thus allowing the viewer to contemplate ones own standing.
The exhibition at Tate Modern 'Image as Burden' succinctly addresses the complex issues thus allowing us to consider personal responses we have towards those that are different from self, particularly her work addresses gender sterio-typing, race, equality, death.
It was interesting to see such a large body of her work particularly portrait images of people who had influenced Dumas herself. Along with a range of work done over the last 20 or more years.
