Having worked towards meeting my deadline for the Next World Land Trust Exhibition

WHAT IT ENTAILED THIS WEEK .................................................

 caption
  1.  THE COLLOGRAPH.......Focussing on a final piece of work  based on the image of HARES  was proving frustreating at the begining of this week as i was trying to work within a time management schedule i felt i had prepared enough i advance as the collagraph was finished two weeks ago the problem this week arose when the white ink still had not dried sufficently for the next ink layer. On monday this was evident as i incorporated the second ink ........ it still neede a few extra days to dry
  2. WEDENSDAY I attempted again to add the second ink with disapointing results  I had coverd my opptions last week when I did a one layer ink collograph which came out well so I have decided to go with this work as a potential gallery piece it also has helped me to achieve another of my Proposal aims .
  3. REFLECTION....................................................AIMS of PROPOSAL being met
  4. I have produced a REDUCTION LINOCUT
                                   ETCHING and INK
  5.                                WATERCOLOUR
  6.                                LINOCUT
  7.                                 COLLOGRAPH these works were part of my proposal with the trust to produce art in response to their Exhibition Themes so i have acheived the results i intended to acheive.

  8. Works compleated images below......................................

I have been working on meeting my deadline for the WLT next exhibition  for the end of March begining of April, Having compleated two works in response to the next theme HARES that tye in with the up and coming Spring Easter holidays : one LINOCUT
                                                                : one WATERCOLOUR and INK
I had been working on a COLLAGRAPH  image of hares .....But unfortunately im disappointed with the out comes and final results.......when in UCS today and working in the print room finalising the collagraph and adding the final colour I am not happy with it.... I went on to work on an Etching based on some drawings from my sketch book I was able to produce 4 images....... so hoping they will dry in time for friday> I have framed the other two works so they are now compleat.
                                                 *********************************
MEETING Kelly .............................. I had a discussion with Kelly on thursday 14th march I will soon meet up with John to talk about the Landscape and my work dealing with Deforestation issues .......

                                                 *********************************

Finishing Fight for the forest a Book based on the story of Chico Mendes an the struggle of the indigenous people in Brazil to stop deforestation and protect the livelyhood of the Rubber Tappers and the Brasil nut trees......................................DID YOU KNOW?....................that due to the biodiversity of the Brazilian Rainforest it is the only place in the world where Brazil nuts can grow!!???..................a number of years ago an entreprenuer tried to grow nuts on a plantation...the trees grew well they flowered but no nuts were produced.... the facts are not compleatly understood how they are pollinated  but it seems to depend on a combination of  certain bees and orchids that are only found in the Brazilian Rainforest...ref (latin america bereau research action ) Ltd, 1989 translated by Chris Whitehouse add material Tony Gross ed by Duncan Martin. Book Fight For The Forest. Chico Mendes in his own words .

PEER DISCUSSIONS

REFLECTING ON TODAYS PEER GROUP DISCUSSION

Part of my professional studio practice is to reflect on aspects of how my collaboration is developing
today i got chance to discuss how my collaberation is going
I had atutorial with Robin and we did discused the need for me to incorporate more contextualising within my practice ... this is an area i mentioned in my last blog......
CONTEXTUALISING .. looking at the aspects of this i have reserched articles on the internet emphasising the effects of deforestation on the indigenous people and the wildlife in past blogs i have pointed out my research also i have pasted links to musicians and song lyrics that deal with these issues in an earlier blog these  i have used to influence prilimary sketches and ideas in my studio space
Robin noted a need for me to focus on artists  and mentioned Gary Humes work particularly the aspects of colour and Donald Judds work particularly on hare drawings i also am influenced by Kathe Kollwitz and leon Golub who deal with social issues and i find Anselm Kiefers highly textuerd work could play a part in relation to texture which i am particularly drawn to in my work
As part of my proposal with WLT is to create a landscape inspired painting i have looked at the works of David Hockney and Cezanne I find their use of colour in particular stimulating
TODAY i received an email from Kelly about meeting John Burton who is the CEO at WLT this will be to discuss the ideas of what type of land scape i will create for the commission I hope to chat about Johns experiences of meeting the indigenous people and hope i can create a work in response to our chat.
PEER GROUPS I spoke with Gillian today and mentioned my concern as to if my work with the trust was a Proper collaboration I have struggled or wrestled with these thoughts i worked hard to find a collaboration and am a little concerned that it is border line in this context Gillian made some helpful points that my art is being used as a tool to aid financial support to the trust if art sells i am producing work i response to the themes and the world land trust is allowing me to make work that will be in the gallery that is a response to the effects of deforestation this includes the aspects of social issues they have given me a student gallery spot that i can hang work up i  in response to their themes and aspects of the effects of deforestation.
Talking about my project with Anna and Karen i got positive feed back about how i was incorporating the aspects of deforestation effects i was also able to chat about chico Mendes and his contestation of struggle in brazil as a leader of the workers union for the rubber tappers in the 1980s.
Lastly I have made spider grams to help me consentrate my ideas about how i could make a piece of art in response to CHICO MENDES plight in brazil.

Reflecting on progress

REFLECTION ON WORK SO FAR .....

Looking back over the last week and my involvment in the WLT i have had the opportunity of meeting with
Kelly each tuesday for a chat about how my involvement with the trust is going.

COMMUNICATION with Trust.

  1. Each week we have a chat to discuss how my role in the Gallery is going, this has been positive and Kelly has been supportive i supervising me in my invigallating role
  2. I have been able to do research on the topic of social issues and kelly is supportive in my ideas about producing issues on the aspects of deforestation within my time at WLT the final outcomes will be Exhibited in the Student spot allocated to me whilst im at the trust I will also see John Burton soon
  3. Im aware that i hadnt fully understood the need to have the recent work Birds and Bees in at the begining of the week as the exhibition is opening SO am prepared in advance for my work on Hares to be ready well before new exhibition opens.
  4. Also I can email Kelly at any time but seeing her each week seems sufficient at the moment .
  5. May be a possibility of getting involved with setting up next exhibition good for experience!

AM I FULLFILLING MY ROLE with the trust.
  1. I have consistantly worked at the Gallery evey tuesday and have fullfilled my role invigalating
  2. I have been producing work in conjunction with Exhibiton themes
  3. My student spot has details of my artist statement and the work I have produced so far
  4. I am learning skills to keep up to deadlines and time managing working on new images that fit in with the trusts themes
  5. I am researching ideas and looking at the issues that deforestation has on the indigenous peoples and their enviroment iam doing this via stories of contestation on the internet also song lyrics by Bruce Cockburn and band Midnight Oil who look at deforestation issues- these areas looking at protest and issues i have been producing work in my student space at college .
  6. NEED to do more research on contextualising my work to look at artists IMPORTANT to work on this area as it is lacking in contextualising my work at present .

Exhibition Theme 'Hares'

WORKING ON THEME for WLT Gallery for next month.......MARCH /APRIL

As discussed in a previous  blogg i am now working on the theme of Hares for the next exhibition
i have spent time researching using  secondary source images also a helpful website ......http://www.countrysideinfo.co.uk/devon_bap/hare.htm this gives details of the enviroment that hares live in .

continued work on a collograph and lino cut ..........Time Management...

Having compleatd the collograph a final coat of varnish has been added to prepare the work for print (three Coats in all) On Monday 11th i will do a number of white on white prints at UCS
also using my sketch book resource of images I have worked on producing a lino cut of a Hare at the moment this is a back up incase the collagraph fails !!! as time is nearing for new WORLD LAND TRUST exhibition and ...... dead lines!!
THE LINOCUT is of the hares head .....I am finding my images of hares are quite carahcature they evoke the essence of HARE!! and have a Humour about them i seem to emphasis features such as form shape which focusses on the eyes ears and body movement  i hope they go down ok.

Images here.......

MONDAY UCS PRINTING UP .......................

I spent time today printing up the images of the collograph
  1. four images white ink on white paper (these i have had to do early as they need to dry for the week before i add  the next colour that blends in with the dried white.
  2. four black ink  images i wanted to do these to see what the image will look like when printed off. feel confident that white ink will turn out well......................
  3. Also did a couple of white on white prints from linocut as an experiment
  4. Now images are inked up will leave to dry till next week
images.................................

   Tuesday 12th March

Gallery invigilating at World Land Trust.....

Taking my images in to show Kelly how I am getting on with the next exhibitions theme she was happy with the progress and about how i had captured the essence of hare rather.
Also discussed how i felt more confident this week in dealing with the public when it came to transactions using the electronic card holder and writing out invoices there are two main invoice books one for larger sales of Art work the other for cards books small sale items . today again i was involved with the public discussing the exhibition and selling smaller items of the goods Also got talking to an elderly gentleman about a book on Moths that he has loaned to WLT

A discussion with Kelly............................

In ten days time the exhibition at present will be coming to an end i discussed with kelly if there was a chance for me to get involved so as to see how the Gallery functions and the process of an ending exhibition and a New one commencing begins due to working on the tuesday it looks like there is a good chance of getting involved with this side of gallery experience so i feel this will be advantagous
to join in.
SOON i will be given the opportunity to speak with JOHN who is the head of WLT about how he would envisage the Landscape work that i am doing as a commission for next month.....

                                                  ****************************
RESEARCH.......
Today also i have continued to research  and make notes on Chico Mendes a brazilian whos cause was to use  peaceful forms of resistance and  protest  for the rights of the indigenous peoples in the brazilian rain forest and also to protect the forests from further destruction, His dream was ...to see the entire forest conserved as conservation guaranteed  the future of all people  and the ecosystem
CHICO THE WORKER
CHICO THE ECOLOGIST
CHICO THE PACIFIST

He became the trade union leader  and received the GLOBAL prize from the united nations.

The Brazil nut tree

Did you know that .............
the Brazil nut tree can only produce nuts in Brazil....
The tree needs a certain type of bee and a certain type of Orchid for its flower to pollinate and produce the Brazil nut
The Bee and Orchid can only be found in Brazil.
When an area of Brazilian Rainforest is deforested it is illegal
To burn or cut down the  Brazil nut tree yet ironically when all the forest around the tree is destroyed, within a year or so the Brazil nut tree will also die..... the soil is so poor that the tree needs sustenance from other trees plants fauna and wild life to survive... again we are reminded of the futility of man and his disregard and lack of respect for the planet and  nature. I'm reminded of a quote linked to Frans Krajberg.... 'The forest came before civilization and the desert after'.   Yvonnesartroomblogspot.com
